ELEVATE+: Speaking from Experience

OKLAHOMA CITY (August 24, 2017) – Today, the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) debuted its latest production of Elevate+, Speaking from Experience. The Elevate+ series features extended video segments focusing on innovative and positive topics in public education in Oklahoma. In Speaking from Experience, five of the state’s veteran educators speak out on how public education has changed over the past half-century. The insight and wisdom from teachers like DeVilla Watts of Fletcher, who has been in an Oklahoma classroom for 53 years, is eye opening.

Other teachers who submitted videos for the project include Irene Sawyers of Durant, with 52 years of teaching experience; Betty Jones of Minco, with 48 years of teaching experience; Karan Meyers of Aline-Cleo, with 52 years in the classroom; and Helen Lowrance of Durant, with 49 years of teaching experience.

After using everything from chalkboards to SMART boards for their lessons, these dedicated teachers share their thoughts about the profession, today’s students, what keeps them coming back each year and most importantly, their advice to new teachers just entering the profession.
